Martin Offiah: England must learn to go for the jugular

As an ambassador for the Rugby World Cup, it would have been hard to convince people that England are realistic candidates to win it if they hadn’t managed to beat the Exiles convincingly.

Some say they are second-rate Aussies but, whatever the case, there was massive pressure on England going into that game against Australian players aiming to prove old coaches, team-mates and rivals wrong.

England’s opening 40 minutes in the 30-10 win were impressive, led by arguably the best player in the world in Kevin Sinfield, who unfortunately picked up an injury.

I was particularly impressed by Leroy Cudjoe even though Sam Tomkins picked up the man-of-the- match honours while James Roby played like he’d never been away.

The second 40 minutes, though, did not quite go to plan and that needs to change. Look at Melbourne Storm in the World Club Challenge or Australia in the Tri-Nations. That’s when Australian sides are at their best. They go for the jugular and they take each and every one of their chances.

Coach Steve McNamara knows England need to bring that facet into their game ahead of the World Cup.

However, it was good preparation for the World Cup but I know Steve would want to have more game time with his players to get a closer idea of his plans.

If I had to assess the team as a whole, I’d probably give them a pass grade, actually maybe even a little bit better.

But they have to raise the intensity — that’s the key area for me — to take on the likes of Australia and New Zealand.

Player of the week

Leroy Cudjoe — He really impressed and was comfortably England’s most improved player.

Team of the week

With no Super League action at the weekend, it has to be England. They did well but could definitely do a little bit better.

Pick of this weekend

It’s back to the Super League and Warrington against Wigan. Wigan are favourites but Warrington will fancy their chances at home.
