Last thing the Broncos needed was another howler by a referee

3 June 2013

All the talk coming into the weekend was about poor refereeing and I’m sorry to say that London Broncos were denied a crucial win because of more inadequate officiating.

Tony Rea’s team were on course for a victory over Castleford Tigers but the game ended 30-30 after Justin Carney and Rangi Chase scored tries which should have been disallowed for a foot in touch and a forward pass.

Things have not been going well for the Broncos and the club are in a bit of downward spiral. It’s a tough job for head coach Rea to get his troops up. They say that you don’t always get what you deserve in sport and I definitely don’t think London got what they deserved.

The decision from video referee Steve Ganson in the Magic Weekend was almost laughable. He incorrectly awarded a try that gave Hull FC a win over their bitter rivals Hull KR.

You can forgive referees for making wrong decisions but if you’re a video official and you have that technology, I don’t see how such an error can be made.

We can keep putting things in place to stop human error but it just shows us that, no matter how many computers we have in place, there will always be mistakes.

That’s part of life and that’s the uncertainty of sport.

Everyone thinks the video referee is the ultimate in decision making but there are some things you just can’t legislate for.

And finally, my wishes go out to Catalan’s Scott Dureau. It’s great to see him back on the pitch after illness and I understand he’s been given the all-clear after taking a knock yesterday, so we all hope he’ll be alright.

Team of the week

Hull FC — They dominated the game but only scored 18 points which shows that Leeds aren’t too far away.

Performance of the week

Daniel Holdsworth — His kicking game and the way he led Hull’s defence proved the difference against Leeds.

Pick of this weekend

Catalan Dragons against Hull — Fourth against fifth. It will be a tough test for the visitors but we all know Catalan are a bit flaky.
