Rose loses the duel

13 April 2012

Justin Rose came agonisingly close to claiming his first European Tour victory after a thrilling duel with Australia's Adam Scott at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.

Rose's final round of 69 put him on 20-under-par 268 at Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg, losing out by one shot as Scott picked up birdies at three of last five holes to finish on 267.

Dean Robertson and Nick Faldo finished in a tie for third place on 269, with defending champion Anthony Wall one shot further behind. Scott's victory was his first since turning professional in June.

The 20-year-old Queenslander, 14 days older than Rose, looked to be cruising when he opened up a four-shot lead after his third birdie of the day on the fifth. But he three-putted the ninth and 10th to see his lead down to one and Rose eventually went ahead when he birdied from 20ft on the 13th.

Scott levelled at the next and he clinched his win with another birdie at the last after Rose missed from 10ft.

Brad Faxon clinched his place in the United States side for this year's Ryder Cup clash by winning the Sony Open in Hawaii. His 20-under total of 260 left him four clear of team-mate Tom Lehman.
