Roddick finds his feet on clay

13 April 2012

Andy Roddick, playing in his first professional clay court tournament, knocked out the No 2 seed Todd Martin in the Verizon Challenge in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 18-year-old Roddick defeated his US Davis Cup teammate 7-5, 6-2, earning a quarter-final berth at the $400,000 tournament.

It was the first meeting between Roddick and the 30-year-old Martin following the surprise defeat of Andre Agassi on Wednesday by the unseeded French qualifier Nicolas Thomann.

Thomann could not build on his shock win, losing 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Christophe Rochus of Belgium in the first career meeting between the two.
