Rixon given job of leading Surrey into a new era

Steve Rixon has been confirmed as Surrey's new head coach and will join them at the end of March after signing a two-year contract.

Rixon played 13 Tests for Australia as a wicketkeeper-batsman but is now better known for his coaching exploits. He has had two successful spells with New South Wales either side of a four-year stint with New Zealand, which ended soon after the Kiwis won the 1999 Test series in England.

"We have searched the world of cricket to find the best person for the crucial position of cricket manager and, having spent time with Steve in Australia, I'm convinced we have the right man to lead the team into a new era," Surrey chief executive Paul Sheldon said.

Rixon, who will team up with new captain Jon Batty, said today: "This is the opportunity and challenge that excites me most."
