Richard Bloomfield’s verbal volley at LTA

Making a racket: Richard Bloomfield
13 April 2012

Richard Bloomfield attacked the Lawn Tennis Association after soaring up the rankings today on the back of his run to the semi-finals of the Hall of Fame Championships.

The 27-year-old claimed his first wins on the ATP Tour since Wimbledon in 2006, including his victory over world No56 Santiago Giraldo, before losing to Mardy Fish in the last four.

Bloomfield went into the Rhode Island event as No 552 in the world and No12 among the Brits but he is now 292 in the global rankings making him fifth among our players.

However, the Norfolk-based player does not expect his achievement to be acknowledged by the LTA, and he criticised their system for nurturing their top players.

"I have been around for too long to waste my time with them," he told the Times. "Everybody knows the system is rubbish — indeed whatever system they have tried, the situation just gets worse and worse. I didn't expect anyone to get in touch with me — in fact, I don't want them to."
