Rhodes left down and out

13 April 2012

Steve Rhodes saved Worcestershire from defeat by Lancashire in the last match of his 23-year career but could not prevent them being relegated after one season in the top division of the County Championship.

The 40-year-old wicketkeeper batted for 17 overs and left the field to a standing ovation. Rhodes, the acting captain, said: "It was a shame about the circumstances and it would have been nice to stave off relegation. The guys gave it their all for me and it just hasn't worked out."

Today's fixtures: Frizzell County Championship, Div 2 - Cardiff: Notts 273-6 v Glamorgan. Taunton: Yorkshire 324 & 125-4, Somerset 141-0 dec.
