Rejuvenated Nets target play-offs as Raptors slump

Michael Weinstein13 April 2012

London-bound New Jersey Nets won for the fourth time in five games last night to continue their dramatic push for a play-off place in the NBA's Eastern Conference.

The Nets, who face Toronto Raptors in back-to-back games at the 02 Arena on 4 and 5 March, beat Memphis Grizzlies 93-88 and are now just five wins behind Charlotte Bobcats, who occupy the eighth and final play-off berth in the conference.

Shooting guard Anthony Morrow came off the bench and played a vital role for the second game in succession after recovering from a hamstring injury which kept him out for 17 games in December.

The past week represents the Nets' best run of the season and coach Avery Johnson said: "Our bench was special. Our starters needed a lift and we've been talking about getting our bench their own identity. They take it really personal in practice, when they play against the starters."

Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said: "The Nets played to their strengths and they deserved the win. They never quit playing, you have to give credit to coach Johnson for changing the culture here. They play hard even when they are behind by 11 points. We could never get the lead up large enough that some of those guys might've quit playing."

In the last week the Nets have also beaten Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers, leaving them with 14 wins and 36 games remaining. The team managed only 12 in the whole of last season.

The Nets will be looking to continue their fine form when they travel to Indiana Pacers on Friday.
