Redknapp planning last-day swoop for £9m Tottenham striker Defoe

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is reported to be trying to sign England striker Jermain Defoe from Tottenham, in a dramatic transfer deadline-day move.

If successful, the £9million move would allow Pompey's Zimbabwean striker Benjani Mwaruwari to leave Fratton Park for Manchester City.

The England international has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane throughout the transfer window after spending most of the season sitting on the bench.

It is reported that Redknapp and Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie spent most of Wednesday trying to agree a fee with Spurs.
