Redknapp on the road to recovery

Jamie Redknapp is fired up to prove wrong the doctor who said he would not play again at the top level.

Liverpool's injury-jinxed midfielder is still three months way from a comeback after extensive knee surgery.

But the England international is determined to re-establish himself after his latest setback.

'I remember when I first picked up this knee injury a doctor from Lilleshall said in the paper I wouldn't be able to play at the top level,' said Redknapp.

'Things like that spur me on, they really do. Fair enough, that's his opinion, but what is he trying to achieve by saying it?

'I am desperate to get back. People are always asking if I fear for my place and the honest answer is No.' Redknapp knows Steven Gerrard now stands in his way for club and country, but added: 'When I am fully fit, I know I am as good as anyone and I just want to prove those doubters wrong.'

Gerrard continued his Premiership education against Roy Keane in Liverpool's 1-0 victory over Manchester United last weekend, and Redknapp added: 'Some see Keane as the complete midfield package but Steve isn't too far behind him. Once he starts adding a few goals, then he will be the complete player in my eyes.'

Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is looking forward to welcoming back club captain Redknapp, but urged caution. 'It is a matter of patience,' he said.
