Redknapp not merry on Cole

West Ham boss Harry Redknapp has indicated that there is no room in the same team for Joe Cole and Paolo di Canio.  

Redknapp, whose side still need one more win to ensure Premiership survival, has become increasingly exasperated with recent results which have not reflected the ability of the players at his disposal.

Even though Redknapp was forced to let Rio Ferdinand leave for Leeds for a record £18million, the Hammers chief knows his squad is capable of much more.

He has indicated he is willing to make tough decisions to gain the improvement he believes can be achieved - and that could include ditching Cole, seen as one of the brightest talents in the English game.

"Joe has got to be able to score or make goals," he said.

"At the end of the day, how many goals has he scored this year?"

The answer to Redknapp's rhetorical question is just four, a figure Cole's manager clearly feels is insufficient if his team are to become a Premiership force.

"If you want a winning team you have to shape your side," he said.

"But when we lose the ball, I've got Joe and Paolo all over the place.

"To get Joe and Paolo in the same team is not easy. I'm going to have to make sacrifices.

"You cannot get them both in if you want to play the way I really want."

And in a thinly-veiled criticism of the player's attitude to the club, Redknapp also appeared to question whether Cole was as committed to Upton Park as the youngster has previously indicated.

"Joe could go on to be a world class player," said Redknapp.

"He wants to commit himself to the club for the rest of his life but I'll believe it when it happens," he told the News of the World.
