Rangers fans' fury at Spanish police

Furious Rangers fans on Thursday condemned their treatment by baton-wielding Spanish police.

Supporters claim riot officers charged in for no reason at Wednesday night's UEFA Cup clash with Osasuna in Pamplona, and Rangers fans have spoken of police lashing out with sticks, fists and kicks before, during and after the match.

Long-time fan John Booth, 45, who was so scared by the trouble he left the ground in fear, said: "I was on an official Rangers club ticket but we were in with Osasuna fans - there was no segregation. Suddenly the police just charged in with their sticks. I saw one of them lash out at a guy, and another knee a fan in the groin - it was unbelievable."

He added: "I said to my friend, 'we're off', so we left and missed most of the second half.

"Everywhere we went as we left the police were hitting people with sticks."

UEFA stressed they would need to hear from Rangers and from officials at the match before deciding whether any action was necessary. European football's governing body are awaiting the delegate's report but stressed a decision on whether to take action may not come until Friday.

Another fan, Al Reaoch, from Edinburgh, watched the trouble flare from across the ground.

He said: "It was completely unprovoked. There was no segregation, but it was not an issue, everyone was getting on fine."

The 51-year-old said there was also trouble as Rangers fans were leaving the ground.

He said: "One guy tripped over a kerb, and the police just suddenly started laying into him. As his friends went to help, they got hit too. People then just started running."
