Rampant England blitz sorry Scots

England 43 Scotland 3

Variety is the spice of life for England manager Clive Woodward after his team swept to a record 43-3 Calcutta Cup victory over Scotland at Twickenham.

Woodward's team dominated a one-sided encounter almost from the first whistle.

The empahtic result extended England's winning run to seven games and also took them past the previous highest mark for tries in a Five/Six Nations tournament.

They now have 22 and with two games still to play, including the title decider against Ireland in Dublin on March 24 - foot-and-mouth crisis permitting - the prospect is for a few more to come yet.

Lawrence Dallaglio grabbed a first-half brace with Richard Hill adding another try before the interval.

Then, in a second half played almost entirely in Scottish territory, the exceptional Iain Balshaw scored twice before Will Greenwood rounded off England's biggest win over their rivals, touching down after replacement Jason Robinson had sliced through the visitors defence.

"The key word is variety," said Woodward.

"We are not doing anything different than when we were losing games and getting stick a couple of years ago.

"The personnel has changed slightly but that is all.

"It is a difficult thing to coach. The players take a lot of responsibility for making key decisions on the pitch and we are fortunate to have people capable of doing that.

"When you are winning it looks easy and we have improved but it is nothing dramatic.

"The plan is the same as it has always been and that is to win matches.

"Scoring tries is a bonus but you don't get any more points for being entertaining."
