Proteas make steady progress

England could manage only one wicket in the first hour of day two as they tried to fight their way back into the final Test at The Wanderers.

South Africa, who yesterday bowled the tourists out for only 180, moved from 29 for none to 66 for one on a sunny but humid morning.

They need to press home their advantage in pursuit of the victory which would snatch a drawn series.

England, by contrast, are hoping to hang on to a 1-0 lead - and may be encouraged by a weather forecast promising thunderstorms for the remainder of the match.

They needed no help from above, however, to break an opening stand between Graeme Smith and Ashwell Prince after just seven runs had been added today.

Prince's unproductive series continued when he propped forward to Stuart Broad and edged a little extra bounce to Graeme Swann at second slip.

His departure came just three balls after Ryan Sidebottom, on his 32nd birthday, was convinced he had Smith's wicket.

But the sound England apparently heard as the home captain flailed an attempted cut at a wide ball was not evident to the third umpire after a DRS appeal against Tony Hill's initial not-out verdict.

Smith's scrape came on 14, and he was soon joined by Hashim Amla as England replaced Sidebottom with James Anderson from the Corlett Drive end.

A pitch which predictably offered plenty to the pace bowlers on day one was again favouring ball over bat. But there was pace in the surface for any attacking shots too, and England knew they needed another breakthrough soon.
