Postiga warns Spurs

Helder Postiga today warned Tottenham that he will quit the Premiership unless the new manager guarantees him first team football.

The £6.25million striker, who was a flop during his first season at White Hart Lane, is preparing to play for host country Portugal in the European Championships next month.

But he fired a warning shot to Spurs as they continue to search for a new coach. Postiga was given the cold shoulder treatment by acting manager David Pleat as Spurs battled to save themselves from relegation.

He believes his style of play is much better suited to international football and will not settle for being fourth choice striker next season behind Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe and Freddie Kanoute.

Postiga said: "Right now, I want to have maximum focus on the national team. But, if things continue as they have in the season just gone then I will not be able to stay at White Hart Lane because what I really want to do is play."

"It is clear that the football in England is more direct. Here it's more about short touches."

Postiga believes he has every chance of playing a major part in Portugal's Euro 2004 campaign, even though he is likely to be third choice behind Pauleta and Nuno Gomes.

Postiga added: "It is not defined who is going to play. I don't consider myself to be third option. I am going to work hard to seize the place. I am here to show my value and that I deserve an opportunity."

Meanwhile, Spurs' bid to lure Dutch star Edgar Davids may be scuppered by a renewed offer from Spanish giants Barcelona.

Davids, available on a free transfer, initially rejected Barcelona's offer of a twoyear contract, but it is now believed the club have returned to the negotiating table and increased their bid by a further year.

Spurs had offered the midfielder a two-year deal worth around £60,000-a-week.
