Tiffany Porter missed out on claiming Britain's sixth medal of the World Championships in Daegu in the 100 metres hurdles on Saturday.

Porter had stormed into the final by winning her semi-final in 12.56 seconds, breaking her own British record in the process.

But the 23-year-old, who was born in Michigan but has held dual citizenship since birth thanks to her London-born mother, could only finish fourth in the final after hitting the penultimate hurdle.

Australia's Sally Pearson claimed gold with a stunning run and new championship record of 12.28 seconds, the fourth fastest of all time and just 0.07secs off the 23-year-old world record.

American Danielle Carruthers took silver ahead of compatriot Dawn Harper, with both given the same time of 12.47s. Porter clocked 12.63 in fourth.

Porter said afterwards: "I got a great start, I was in a very good position and I hit hurdle nine. Everything happened so fast, it's kind of a blur right now.

"I clipped the hurdle and then the race was over. That's one of the thrills about our event, anything can happen. Nobody wants to hit a hurdle but sometimes it happens.

"Unfortunately I didn't get the silver. I'm going to watch the race, I will probably watch it a million times, and take the positives away from it and grow into a better athlete and come back stronger for next year."

Britain's other chance for a medal was in the women's 4x400m relay, but the quartet of Perri Shakes-Drayton, Nicola Sanders, Christine Ohuruogu and Lee McConnell finished a distant fourth behind the United States, Jamaica and Russia.

Hurdles specialist Shakes-Drayton put in a solid first leg and when the stagger unwound, Sanders found herself in fourth position, a position effectively maintained for the rest of the race apart from when Ohuruogu was initially overtaken by Ukraine.
