Ponting shines as Aussie skipper

13 April 2012

Ricky Ponting dominated the first morning of the four-day Vodafone Challenge match against Somerset at Taunton, having been asked to captain Australia for the first time.

He treated a large crowd to a variety of powerful strokes, hitting an undefeated 94 off 86 balls.

Ponting came in at the fall of Matthew Hayden's wicket with the total on nine and helped guide his side to 176 for two off 31 overs at lunch. Michael Slater had made 28 before falling lbw to Jason Kerr.

Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar, guesting for Somerset, conceded 46 runs off just seven overs.
