Pirlo frozen out of Italy line-up

Giovanni Trapattoni has named his preferred starting XI for Italy's first game of Euro 2004 against Denmark, ending Andrea Pirlo's hopes of breaking into the side.

The coach, criticised after Italy's first-round exit from the 2002 World Cup, has since changed his system to a more attacking 4-2-3-1 formation, allowing Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti to play in the same team.

But this means no place in midfield for Pirlo, who enjoyed a fantastic season for Serie A champions AC Milan.

"There are no doubts he is a great player," Trapattoni said of Pirlo, 25.

"But the Italy squad has a different tactical system to Milan. The line-up against Denmark is Buffon, Panucci, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Perrotta, Zanetti, Del Piero, Totti, Vieri."
