Perry hoping for England recall

12 April 2012

Shaun Perry has not given up hope of forcing his way back into England's World Cup plans.

The Bristol scrum-half was dropped for Saturday's 44-22 Pool A victory over Samoa following a disappointing performance in the humiliating defeat to South Africa just over a week earlier.

Speaking on his Powerade Rugby World Cup website blog ahead of Friday's clash with Tonga, Perry said: "Obviously, it is going to be tough to get back in to a winning side - but all I can do is train hard and remain hopeful."

Despite his personal disappointment, Perry was pleased to see a positive vibe return to the England camp in the wake of Saturday's vital win.

"There were a lot of smiles around the England camp on Sunday morning," he added.

"That performance, which was close to being the real England again, was exactly what we needed to lift our confidence for the rest of the tournament.

"It was there for all to see: the lads played with more structure and organisation, and we executed exactly what we had been doing in training.

"For me, the major difference with our first two games was we began to take our chances, which was neatly demonstrated with Paul Sackey's try near the end.

"Yes, there were some nerve-wracking moments, but we dug in and pulled away when it mattered most."
