Paula Radcliffe wins fifth Olympics call

13 April 2012

Paula Radcliffe and Mara Yamauchi were today named in the Great Britain squad to run in the marathon at the London 2012 Olympics.

The British Olympic Association also announced that Scott Overall will run in the men's event.

The trio represent the first individuals to be selected from the sport of athletics and bring the total number of athletes officially chosen for Team GB for London 2012 to 19 - including 11 sailors and five boxers.

All three marathon runners achieved the UKA 'A' qualifying standard during 2011. Radcliffe's time of 2hr 23min and 46sec in Berlin was more than seven minutes inside the 'A' standard. It was the world-record holder's second race this year following her break after having her second child.

Radcliffe, 37, is the third British athlete to be selected for five Olympics, following Tessa Sanderson and Chris Maddocks, and she will be the first to compete in three marathons.
