1956: Born October 10, Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

1979: Signs for Dundee United after impressing for Bankfoot Juniors.

1981: Wins first of 20 Scotland caps in game against Wales.

1983: Wins Scottish Premier Division championship medal.

1984: Helps United to European Cup semi-final.

1989: Retires after making 385 league appearances - during which he scored 109 goals - for the Tannadice club. Takes up a coaching role with United.

1993: August - Takes first managerial job at St Johnstone.

1998: September - Returns to Dundee United as manager.

2000: August - Resigns as Dundee United manager just two matches into new season.

October - Appointed manager at Plymouth.

2002: Wins Nationwide Manager of the Year award for Division Three after Plymouth win title.

2004: March 3 - Plymouth, four points clear at the top of Division Two, confirm Sturrock is in talks with Southampton over vacant manager's position.

March 4 - Appointed new Southampton manager.

August 23 - Leaves Southampton by mutual agreement after just two games of the new season.
