Pakistan leave Proteas in the dark

12 April 2012

Pakistan cashed in on a century from Mohammad Yousuf and Shahid Afridi's big-hitting to beat South Africa by 141 runs in Durban and level the one-day international series at 1-1.

Yousuf made an unbeaten 101 from 111 balls in a Pakistan total of 351 for four - Afridi smashing 77 from just 35 deliveries - and South Africa, whose innings was interrupted by a floodlight failure at Kingsmead, mustered only 210 all out.

Afridi (77no) capped a fine individual performance by taking three for 25 with his brisk wrist-spin, as the Proteas were bowled out in only 40 overs in this day-night match.

Pakistan won the toss but almost immediately lost Kamran Akmal, who misread the third ball he faced from Shaun Pollock and was given out lbw offering no shot - with just one run on the board.

After making his ninth ODI half-century, Imran Nazir (57) also went lbw - aiming across the line at Charl Langeveldt. Younis Khan (93) and Yousuf then put on 124 to take the score to 204 for three, before the former was caught by Langeveldt at long-off from the off-spin of Graeme Smith.

When Afridi came in to bat he dominated an unbroken stand of 129 with Yousuf - hitting five fours and six sixes.

South Africa's reply got off to a credible start, but openers Smith and AB de Villiers both fell to catches by Younis - the captain mistiming one off Mohammad Asif and the latter pulling Abdul Razzaq to midwicket.

De Villiers' 43 proved to be the top score of a home effort in which most batsmen got starts but none went on.

Jacques Kallis edged Razzaq behind, aiming a big shot off the back foot just before a power cut which left the ground and surrounding area in darkness and forced the players off the field.

On the resumption, Ashwell Prince fell to an outstanding catch above his head at first slip by Younis - off Azhar Mahmood and from there the Pakistani spinners took over - Shoaib Malik and Afridi strangling an innings which petered out alarmingly.
