Pace pair batter Bermuda

12 April 2012

England's pace attack dismantled minnows Bermuda in their opening World Cup warm-up contest at Arnos Vale.

Jon Lewis and James Anderson shared a handful of wickets as the part-timers crashed to 32 for six in the 15th over, replying to England's 286 for eight.

Lewis' reward came without cost, after he replaced Anderson from the sea end.

With Bermuda captain Irving Romaine out of action due to concussion suffered while fielding, hopes of some respectability being given to the total rested with Glamorgan's David Hemp.

Jamie Dalrymple's 76 helped England recover from losing half their side inside 25 overs.

Michael Vaughan's men were rocked by heavyweight left-arm spinner Dwayne Leverock's spell in mid-innings but Dalrymple's 79-ball effort staved off embarrassment.

Vaughan, testing his troublesome left hamstring which restricted him to only three appearances in the recent Commonwealth Bank Series campaign, won the toss and gave himself an immediate opportunity to put his pads on.

With Andrew Strauss one of the two players left out of the 13-a-side contest - Ravi Bopara was the other - Vaughan was partnered by Ed Joyce.

They did not spend long together, however, as Irishman Joyce pushed tentatively at a full-length delivery from Kevin Hurdle and had his off-stump pegged back.

Hurdle's third-over breakthrough was followed by Vaughan's dismissal in the seventh when a pull was well held by David Hemp, his former England A colleague, at square leg.
