Owen Farrell ignored Warren Gatland’s 'men-against-boys' jibe

Owen Farrell denies that Warren Gatland’s pre-match analogy about “men against boys” fired up England before they defeated Wales, writes Chris Jones.

Wales head coach Gatland said England’s “boys” who were beaten 30-3 in Cardiff last year may not be ready to become “men”.

Farrell and his team-mates proved that was not the case yesterday as he kicked 19 points in a 29-18 victory over Gatland’s side at Twickenham.

“The ‘men-against-boys’ tag didn’t come into at all for me and it was a case of just showing what we could do,” said Farrell. “The drive is coming from within the camp. “

England will win the title if they beat Italy on Saturday and France defeat Ireland in Paris. Should the Irish win, Stuart Lancaster’s side will need to overcome a 49‑point deficit on Ireland. France have slim hopes of the title themselves.

“All we can do is improve on this game because that’s what good teams do and we will put the best possible performance in when we go to Italy,” said Saracens fly-half Farrell. “Ireland have been playing well but they are against a strong French side that can beat anybody on their day.”
