Roger Federer made sure of his qualification for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 next month with a straight sets win over Kevin Anderson at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.

The former world No1 and seven times Wimbledon champion, 32, has slipped to seven in the rankings and was in danger of missing out on a record-equalling 12th successive appearance at the ATP Finals, an event he has won six times. But the Swiss star’s second-round victory in Paris means he is assured of being in the top eight at the end of the year, and a place in the London event.

Federer came through 6-4, 6-4 to set up a third round meeting against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, who had earlier beaten 11th seed Tommy Haas by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.

Federer said: “It’s been a tough year so this is a bit of a highlight.”
