Premiership Rugby players are edging closer to a resumption of training after clubs were informed they could keep players on furlough throughout the course of the training period.

With limited income, clubs were concerned about the financial implications of bringing back players wholesale to their respective training bases.

But now it is thought top-flight players could be back in training as soon as the end of next week after being told by HMRC that the furlough system could still temporarily be in place.

The furlough system would then likely last until the league resumes, the date for which is still some way off from being finalised by Premiership Rugby bosses.

In a statement released last Thursay (May 21), the Professional Game Board said that it would be a "minimum of two weeks" before players, staff and officials can return to a "safe training environment".

Players had initially hoped to return to small-group training last week, but agreed to delay until bigger squads were allowed back.
