London 2012 Olympic high jump champion Anna Chicherova is among 31 athletes to have failed a drugs test following the reanalysing of samples from the 2008 Beijing Games, writes Matt Majendie.

Samples from 2012 are also being reanalysed, with the results of those tests expected later this week.

Yevgeny Zagorulko, coach of Chicherova, who won bronze in Beijing, told Russian news agency TASS: “Three days ago, Anna received a notice that her doping sample from Beijing tested positive after a recheck. So far, this is at the development stage and has not yet been finally confirmed.”

The IOC had already confirmed to the Russian Olympic Committee that 14 of the athletes in question were Russian, with the remainder coming from 11 other countries.

Russia’s track and field team are set to learn their fate over their participation in Rio this summer, with the IAAF council due to make a ruling on June 17.
