Fit-again Greg Rutherford feels ready to take on the world

Greg Rutherford has won his fitness battle to earn selection for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the World Championships, writes Matt Majendie.

The Olympic long jump champion had been a major doubt because of a hamstring tear but had been given until the end of the month to prove his fitness.

This morning, UK Athletics performance director Neil Black said he and the selection committee were satisfied that Rutherford, who has had a history of hamstring problems, was fit for the Moscow championships, which start a week on Friday.

Black said: “Greg has shown a remarkable level of recovery during a short space of time, something he has shown an aptitude for throughout his career.

“Following the fitness tests and his record of being able to produce a quality performance off minimal build-up, I am pleased to confirm his place in the team. He’ll continue to work closely with the support staff to maximise every additional moment in between now and August 14 [when he competes].”

Chris Tomlinson, who would have taken the vacant long jump spot in the team for Russia, now misses out.
