British Grand Prix: Mercedes bid to overturn Nico Rosberg's 10-second penalty

1/13

Mercedes are hopeful they can overturn Nico Rosberg’s 10-second penalty at the British Grand Prix for misuse of the team radio.

The penalty meant that Mercedes were denied a one-two, the added time dropping the German to third behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

The champions have appealed against the punishment given to Rosberg after he was told how to fix his gearbox when stuck in seventh gear.

Such instructions are banned but the FIA are adamant the team radio ban should remain claiming it has unanimous team support. However, the Mercedes and Red Bull hierarchies spoke out against it in the aftermath of Lewis Hamilton’s victory yesterday.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said: “He would have been stuck in seventh gear and that would have been the end of the race for him probably. The rules maybe need a rethink. It needs to be discussed.”

Christian Horner, principal at Red Bull, said: “I think the radio rule is rubbish.”
