Brit wrestler gets two-year ban for drugs

6 July 2012

British wrestler Myroslav Dykun was today banned for two years for taking amphetamines.

Dykun, who won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, tested positive after claiming the under-74kg greco-roman title at the British senior championships in March.

The 29-year-old was seen as an Olympics medal hope but is now banned until April 29 2014, with the penalty back-dated to when he was provisionally suspended.

“Our pre-games prevention program was put in place to ensure that only clean athletes represent Britain and this proves the system is working,” said Andy Parkinson, chief executive of UK Anti-Doping.

Dykun, who was born in Ukraine, married a British wrestler and moved to this country in 2003.

Britain will have only one wrestler at the Games, Ukraine-born Olga Butkevych.
