No sign of melting ice dispute

Hopes of salvaging the American ice hockey season have all but disappeared.

Representatives of NHL team owners and locked-out players ended their latest meeting in New York without reaching agreement, and with no plans for further talks.

The two sides have been unable to resolve the pay dispute which has already resulted in the loss of 721 games.

"We continue to have significant philosophical differences," said Ted Saskin, senior director of the NHL Players' Association.
