Nike and RFU £500,000 bill

The Rugby Football Union and its official strip supplier Nike faced a £500,000 bill for legal costs today after failing in a High Court bid to outlaw the use of English rugby's red rose emblem on jerseys marketed by a major leisure wear company.

A judge rejected a 'war of the roses' trade mark and passing-off action brought by the RFU and Nike against Cotton Traders - whose managing director is former England captain Fran Cotton.

Mr Justice Lloyd ordered the RFU and Nike to pay the costs of the case but granted them leave to appeal.
