Nicol takes Open title

13 April 2012

Peter Nicol, the Scotsman-turned-Englishmen, won a dress-rehearsal for his defence of the Commonwealth title by winning back the British Open on the court they will use for the Games in Manchester in three months' time.

It also made him the first Englishman to win the title since World War Two.

The top-seeded world champion beat John White, the Australian-turned-Scot, 15-9, 15-8, 15-8 with a relentlessly disciplined display.

England's hopes of having the first home pair of British Open winners since 1938 ended when 22-yearold Tania Bailey was beaten 9-3, 9-0, 9-0 in only 32 minutes by Australia's Sarah Fitz-Gerald, the top-seeded title-holder, in the women's final.
