Tampa Bay Bucaneers wide receiver Mike Evans sat during the American national anthem before Sunday’s NFL game against the Chicago Bears in protest at Donald Trump’s election.

Trump beat Hillary Clinton to become the 45th US president last week after a bitter campaign battle that featured several controversial policies.

Evans sat alone on the bench while the rest of his teammates stood as the The Star-Spangled Banner was played prior to Tampa Bay's 36-10 victory.

Evans said: “I told myself if this happens [Trump wins] then America’s not right.

"When he ran, I thought it was a joke and the joke continues.

"I'm not a political person that much, but I got common sense. And I know when something's not right."

Evans is adamant his decision to remain seated will not be a one-off but promised to stand if it is revealed Trump's election was a practical joke.

Dozens of players knelt during the anthem in order to protest against racial equality earlier this season, following the lead of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
