University of Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray has made history after he was selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the first pick of the 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville, Tennessee.

Murray, who also played baseball in college, had previously been drafted as the ninth overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, by the Oakland Athletics, but committed to a career in football after winning the Heisman Trophy as star of the Oklahoma Sooners last season.

The 21-year-old becomes the first man in history to be selected in the first round of both the MLB and NFL drafts.

He also follows in the footsteps of fellow Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was last year’s first overall pick for the Cleveland Browns, the first time in history that two quarterbacks from the same university have gone in the first round in successive seasons, let alone as first picks.

Murray had been widely regarded as the best quarterback in a draft dominated by defensive talent, a pattern that was reflected in the other early picks.

Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa was picked second by the San Francisco 49ers, following in the footsteps of both father, John (ex-Miami Dolphins), and brother, Joey (current Los Angeles Chargers), in becoming a first round selection.

The New York Jets also opted for a defensive end with their top pick, taking University of Alabama defensive end Quinnen Williams with the third overall selection.

The Oakland Raiders sprang the first major shock of the evening by taking Clemson DE Clelin Ferrell with the fourth overall pick, before the New York Giants also went for a surprise pick at number six in Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, who now becomes the potential successor to Eli Manning.
