Wakefield's former Great Britain hooker Terry Newton has been suspended by the UK Anti-Doping agency after testing positive for a prohibited substance, according to the club.

The 31-year-old former Leeds and Wigan forward, who joined the Wildcats from Bradford in the close season, was tested during pre-season training in November.

Newton played in two of Wakefield's opening matches of Engage Super League XV - he missed one game with a bicep tear - but has been suspended with immediate effect.

A statement by his club said: "Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have confirmed that Terry Newton has been provisionally suspended by the UK Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for a prohibited substance on 24th November 2009.

"Neither Wakefield Trinity Wildcats nor Terry Newton will be making any further comment on the issue until further notice."

Newton is the second high-profile Super League player to fail a drugs test in the last 12 months.

Last August Wigan and England second-row forward Gareth Hock was handed a two-year ban after testing positive earlier in the year for cocaine.

Newton, who won 15 Great Britain caps from 1998 to 2007, only last week spoke of his new appetite for rugby league following his move to Wakefield.
