Newell fined over comments

12 April 2012

Luton manager Mike Newell has been fined £6,500 by the Football Association in relation to post-match comments about female assistant referee Amy Rayner in November.

After being charged with improper conduct - which he denied - and requesting a personal hearing Newell was fined by a disciplinary commission hearing on Tuesday.

He was warned and fined £5,000 "for his specific comments about assistant referee Amy Rayner", and also £1,500 for "failing to act in the best interests of the game" in that his comments were made about the role of women match officials in football generally.
