New Glazer bid mystery

14 April 2012

Malcolm Glazer's latest bid for Manchester United took a mysterious twist today when the American tycoon issued a statement to the Stock Exchange denying his company was behind reports of a new move for the club.

Standard Sport revealed on Friday that Glazer, who already owns 28 per cent of United, had appointed

NM Rothschild as backers for a new £800million assault on Old Trafford. He is attempting to open negotiations with major shareholders JP McManus and John Magnier.

But, acting under pressure from City regulators, Glazer issued a statement today distancing himself from the report.

He said: "The Glazer Family wishes to record that no statement made in the UK press in recent days, attributed to any member of the family or person associated with the family was authorised."
