Nalbandian destroys Nadal to take French title

13 April 2012

In-form David Nalbandian claimed his second Masters Series title in the space of a fortnight when he destroyed Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the final of the Paris tournament on Sunday.

The Argentinian, ranked 18th in the world, was in rampant mood as he swept past the beleaguered Spaniard 6-4 6-0 in 69 minutes in Bercy.

Wristy: Nalbandian returns one of Nadal's efforts

Nalbandian thrashed the world number two 6-1 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters on his way to the title there two weeks ago, and this performance was just as impressive.

It is the seventh title of his career although comes too late to qualify him directly for the Masters Cup in Shanghai, which begins on Monday week.

Nalbandian, who finished ninth in the ATP Race, said he would decide on Monday morning whether to go on standby for the season-ending showpiece in China.

"I played great all tournament, not just today," Nalbandian told Canal+.

"It has been a magnificent week, I am so happy."

Nadal did not blame the defeat on his knee, which was heavily strapped throughout the match.

Net gain: Nadal congratulates Nalbandian at the end of the match

The French Open champion said: "I wasn't playing my best, and David played unbelievably.

"He is playing at 100% all the time at the moment, and is in great form after his win in Madrid.

"I congratulate David on a great tournament."
