Murray plans rest after defeat

12 April 2012

Andy Murray plans to have a rest after his encouraging summer was brought to an end by a 6-1 5-7 6-3 6-0 defeat to Nikolay Davydenko in the fourth round of the US Open.

"I just want to take a break now, I think. I've earned it," Murray said after the match.

"Fourth round is not a bad result but, obviously, I would have liked to have done better."

British number one Murray, seeded 17th in the men's singles at Flushing Meadows, had just gone two sets to one down against the seventh seed before persistent rain spared him further punishment on Tuesday.

Upon the resumption at Louis Armstrong Stadium he was immediately broken by Davydenko and went 4-0 down in the fourth before being broken a third time in the set.

And the ruthless Russian served out the game - despite an unsuccessful Hawkeye challenge - to complete a fourth-set whitewash and set up a quarter-final clash with Tommy Haas or Marat Safin.

Murray held his hands up and admitted Davydenko was the better man on the day.

"I didn't help myself by serving three double faults in the first game," he added.

"Sometimes you just have to say, 'Too good', and he was too good today.

"He was just playing the big points better than me. He started off better than me both days. That's something I'll have to learn from. I'm not used to going on at 11am for matches."
