Mpenza impresses in City trial

12 April 2012

Manchester City are poised to complete the signing of Emile Mpenza after he impressed during a trial match with the club.

The 28-year-old Belgium striker took part in a specially-arranged match on Wednesday night at the City of Manchester Stadium and is set to agree a deal until the end of the season.

City are desperately short of attacking options, with both Darius Vassell and Paul Dickov currently on the sidelines.

Mpenza recently severed his contract in Qatar with Al Rayyan and is free to join another club outside the transfer window because he is a free agent.

"I make this move as revenge with respect to all those who criticised my decision to play in Qatar," he told Belgian radio station Bel-RTL.

"At 28 years old, I am not finished and I will prove it in Manchester. To play in England is to carry out a dream."

Mpenza has played more than 50 times for Belgium and impressed in Germany's Bundesliga with Schalke and Hamburg before moving to Qatar.

He was recently linked with a switch to Wigan, who instead opted to sign Julius Aghahowa.
