Mourinho agrees new contract

14 April 2012

Jose Mourinho has given Chelsea an immediate lift following their Champions League exit by agreeing terms on a new five-year contract

He has been rewarded with a lucrative new deal after winning the Barclays Premiership title and Carling Cup in his first season at the club.

The Stamford Bridge boss, who signed an initial three-year contract with the club last summer, has now pledged his future to the Blues until at least 2010.

Mourinho was already the best-paid manager in the Premiership, with estimated total earnings of £5.1million this season, according to a survey released yesterday by France Football magazine.

His new deal was expected to net him around £5million a year even before bonuses or commercial deals, such as his tie-up with American Express.

The Chelsea boss finalised terms over his new contract, which comes into effect at the start of next season, at Stamford Bridge today.

He had returned to work despite having given his players two days off to celebrate their title success and to recover from the setback of their Champions League semi-final defeat by Liverpool.

Shortly after that 1-0 second leg defeat at Anfield, he declared: "Before we have a meal with the families at Stamford Bridge on Friday, the players have two days off.

"But I will be at Stamford Bridge to start preparing for next season. It is coming soon and we want to be ready.

"This season, out of four competitions, we won two. Next season, out of five competitions - as we're in the Community Shield as well - we will again try to win two or three."

Mourinho added: "I know I cannot win everything but I cannot complain with my success, my players or my career as I'm a happy man.

"I'm just sad because of this result. But Wednesday is another day and I'll be preparing for next season."
