More time for Wright-Phillips

12 April 2012

Shaun Wright-Phillips has been cleared to play for Manchester City against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Wright-Phillips was expected to miss the Premier League encounter at Eastlands after being charged with violent conduct by the Football Association following his retaliatory strike at Rory Delap at Stoke on Saturday.

However, the FA have granted City an extension to the normal deadline for responding to the charge, which ran out on Thursday evening.

And as the FA disciplinary panel will not now hear the case on Friday, the England star is free to play against Gareth Southgate's men.

Earlier on Thursday Mark Hughes expressed his unhappiness at the way the FA had gone about taking action against Wright-Phillips.

Under normal circumstances, the FA should have brought their violent conduct charge within 48 hours.

Instead, they took over four days, although Soho Square officials claim to have kept City fully informed of an unspecified procedural difficulty that had nothing to do with the awful weather that brought the capital to a halt on Monday.

City now have until 6pm on Friday to respond, with the hearing due to take place on Monday at 11am.
