Monty injury may wreck Open bid

Colin Montgomerie may learn today if an injured back will force him to withdraw from this month's Open Championship at Muirfield.

The knowledge that former Ryder Cup teammate Seve Ballesteros has already pulled out because his game has been destroyed in part by a degenerative spine disorder will do nothing to allay Montgomerie's fears for his own career.

Montgomerie, 39, will see a specialist before confirming his entry for an event he has played every year since 1990.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Soren Hansen claimed his maiden European Tour victory in the Irish Open at Fota Island when he birdied the fourth hole in a four-man sudden-death play-off.
