Mo Farah and David Weir in the race for Laureus glory on home soil

Nominated: Mo Farah
13 April 2012

Londoners Mo Farah and David Weir are among six British nominations for the Laureus World Sports awards announced in London today.

Farah is in contention for the World Breakthrough award following his gold and silver medals at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu. He faces competition from golfer Rory McIlroy, who won his first Major at the US Open.

Weir, meanwhile, is up against Oscar Pistorius in the Sportsperson with a Disability category in a list of nominees announced by Laureus World Academy members Lord Coe, Sean Fitzpatrick, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Daley Thompson at Central Hall, Westminster.

England's cricketers will battle it out for the World Team award against the Rugby World Cup-winning All Blacks, Champions League winners Barcelona, NBA winners Dallas Mavericks, Red Bull's F1 outfit, after a second straight constructors' title, and Japan's women's football team.

Other British contenders at the awards, in London on February 6, are golfer Darren Clarke, up for the World Comeback of the Year following his Open win in July, and BMX rider Jamie Bestwick, who recovered from a fractured skull to win a fifth straight X Games gold. He is on the World Action shortlist.

No British competitors are in contention for the top individual awards.

Laureus World Sports Academy chairman Edwin Moses said: "This has been a great year for sport and the academy are going to find it extremely difficult to decide who to vote for.

"We have had several massive performances both by individuals and teams and that has been reflected in the nominations. I look forward to what should be a great awards ceremony."
