Mixed night for Bellamy

14 April 2012

Craig Bellamy will miss Wales' friendly against Scotland next week after his goal-scoring comeback was ruined by Lucas Neill's controversial challenge.

The striker's absence was confirmed by angry Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson, who also revealed that Jonathan Woodgate will be out of England's game against Portugal on Wednesday through injury.

Bellamy suffered slight knee ligament damage in a challenge from Neill but recovered enough to score the opening goal before Jonathan Stead struck late on to earn Blackburn a 1-1 draw.

Robson said he had called England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson to say that Woodgate, who missed last night's match, would not make the friendly in Portugal and would make the same call to Wales' Mark Hughes.

He said: 'Craig's injured and he can't be thinking about midweek internationals - he has hardly played for five months.

'I didn't think it was a right tackle and I was amazed the referee didn't do anything about it. The defender went right through him.

'He cleaned Craig out. His knee has puffed up and he's limping.

'Jonathan has had a slight reaction in the groin and has been examined by the surgeon who operated on him for a double hernia.

"The surgeon feels it is nothing serious.'
