Mauresmo sent packing by Safarova

12 April 2012

Amelie Mauresmo became the highest-profile casualty of this year's French Open when she was dumped out of her home tournament by third-round opponent Lucie Safarova.

Mauresmo, seeded fifth, imploded in both sets as she lost 6-3 7-6 (7/3) to the blossoming 25th seed, who hails from the Czech Republic.

Second seed Maria Sharapova produced a mixed performance against fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva before sealing her place in the fourth round with a 6-1 6-4 win.

But Sharapova was not completely convincing, and her serve is still in second gear as a result of the shoulder trouble she has struggled with since the start of April.

Sharapova converted all three of her break points to win the opening set in 28 minutes, but the second set did not exactly go according to plan for the two-time grand slam winner.

She found herself 3-0 down after losing her serve twice before breaking back in the fourth game.

Sharapova was then broken again but her 19-year-old opponent was unable to take advantage.

Sharapova broke twice in a row, and held consecutive service games - the second to love - to regain the lead.

In what proved to be the final game, the unseeded Kudryavtseva hit a forehand long after saving the first of two match points.

Elsewhere, third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova also progressed with a 6-2 6-3 win over Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova on Court One, while Ana Ivanovic, the seventh seed, overcame Romania's Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2 6-0.
