A day after dislocating his ankle, Tony Finau amazingly found himself in contention on his Masters debut as Jordan Spieth assumed his customary position on top of the leaderboard.

Spieth eagled the eighth and fired five birdies in succession on the back nine to card an opening 66 and finish two shots ahead of Finau and Matt Kuchar.

Rory McIlroy was just a shot further back after breaking 70 in the first round for just the second time, with crucial par saves on the last three holes completing a 69 in pursuit of the win he needs to complete the career grand slam.

Leaderboard after Day One...

Shot of the day

That was how three-time Masters champion Nick Faldo, commentating on television, described the pitch Spieth conjured up from left of the 18th green to salvage a final-hole bogey. Spieth seemed to agree.

Round of the day

Spieth's 66 did not look on the cards when he was level par after seven, but he eagled the eighth and birdied five holes in succession from the 13th.

Quote of the day

"To be in this position I'm at now (is) nothing short of a miracle if you ask me."

Statistic of the day

The previous two Masters champions, Danny Willett and Sergio Garcia, also won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic earlier in the season. This year's Dubai winner, China's Li Haotong, is three off the lead after day one.

Tweet of the day

The PGA Tour hints at the fact that Spieth has now led or shared the lead after nine of his 17 rounds at Augusta National.

Toughest hole

The seventh hole was ranked the 10th hardest in 2017, but played the toughest on the opening day due to a tough pin position that resulted in six double bogeys and a triple bogey from 1998 champion Mark O'Meara.

Easiest hole

The 13th and 15th both played to an average of 4.644, although the 13th was officially the easiest after giving up two eagles and 42 birdies, while the 15th was the scene of defending champion Sergio Garcia's nightmare 13.
