Newcastle have confirmed that striker Obafemi Martins will be out for around six weeks with a knee injury.

The Nigerian suffered the injury in Wednesday night's 2-1 Carling Cup defeat against Tottenham at St James' Park.

He played the full 90 minutes of the match but after the game it emerged that he suffered a blow which caused a problem in the area around his right tibia near the knee joint.

Caretaker boss Chris Hughton told his club's official website: "First indications are that he will be out for about six weeks."
