Martin Kaymer ready to replace Tiger Woods

Eye on the Tiger: Kaymer can oust Woods at the top of world golf with a strong performance in Spain
13 April 2012

Martin Kaymer begins his bid to become world No1 today at the Andalucian Masters in Valderrama.

The German Ryder Cup star (left) will replace Tiger Woods at the head of the rankings with a top-two finish in Spain.

Whatever the result, Woods's 281-week reign will end as the American is not in action.

If Kaymer does not finish high enough, England's Lee Westwood will take top spot.

Like Woods, Westwood is not playing this week, but will rise above him due to his average rankings points over the last two years.

Despite winning the USPGA Championship in August, Kaymer believes his Ryder Cup team-mate deserves to be recognised as world No1.

He said: "Lee is the best player in the world right now. He's had a lot of trouble these last few months and I'm pretty sure if he hadn't he'd be number one by now. We've both played fantastic golf this year."
